In 2019, Suncor and Willow Lake Métis Nation entered into a Relationship Framework Agreement which will help our community to grow and prosper for many years to come. This agreement helps ensure Willow Lake has a voice with respect to impacts from Suncor operations and how we work together as partners in the area.
Suncor believes that learning from and with Indigenous Peoples is key in progressing the way the company thinks and acts to build mutual trust and respect with Indigenous Peoples.
In 2021, Suncor launched the Journey of Reconciliation—an evolution of its social goal that recognized the importance of building authentic relationships with Indigenous Peoples.
Suncor’s work on this journey is shaped by four focus areas, including partnering with Indigenous businesses and communities. This is achieved through unique partnerships like Thebacha (the East Tank Farm Development partnership) and Astisiy (the Northern Courier Pipeline partnership), which Willow Lake Métis Nation (WLMN) is a partner, and long-term agreements with communities in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).
Since 2016, several agreements that guide Suncor and the Indigenous communities as they work together have been signed with First Nations and Métis communities in the RMWB. Suncor and the WLMN entered into one such agreement in 2019.
“These agreements are pivotal to Suncor. We recognize that this work is critical for both Suncor and the Indigneous communities, like the Willow Lake Métis Nation, and position us to collectively succeed for many years to come.” Mike MacSween, EVP, Mining and Upgrading, Suncor.
