Job Description and Purpose 

The Willow Lake Métis Nation Indigenous Guardian program is guided by the WLMN Steering Committee, which is directed by Willow Lake Métis Nation. Reporting to the Sustainability Lead, this position plays an important role in asserting our rights and title, and will monitor the freshwater, terrestrial and cultural resources within the WLMN traditional territory. 


Specifically, the WLMN Indigenous Guardian will monitor environmental and cultural resources and the impacts of resource development; accurately collect monitoring data; build and maintain productive relationships with the WLMN Citizens and the community; and report their activities to the Sustainability Department at Willow Lake Métis Nation. 



 Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Conduct site visits throughout WLMN traditional territory. 
  • Engage with WLMN Citizens, and the community, to build a positive working relationship. 
  • Collect and record data, as required, related to the health of WLMN ecological and cultural values and the impacts of resource development. 
  • Work with WLMN Citizens to document cultural sites and monitor impacts. 
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with industry partners and provincial/federal agency staff. 
  • Educate WLMN Citizens about WLMN issues and Indigenous Guardian activities. 
  • Support WLMN communications and events by participating in open houses, submitting articles for community newsletter, and contributing photos for social media marketing. 
  • Work with school(s) to raise awareness with the youth about the Indigenous Guardian program and activities.
